The Advantages and Disadvantages of using Secondary Research

Secondary Research:

What is this?

- Secondary Research refers to the gathering of data from different sources in order to be able to gain a more in-depth based knowledge on a certain topic such as a target audience.
- Secondary Research can be gathered through multiple techniques such as the internet, journals, books, readership figures and DVD Sales.
- Secondary Research is research which already exists whereas Primary Research is conducting new and press results.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of using Secondary Research:

Advantages:

- One advantage to using Secondary Research over other forms of research such as primary research would be that it is quicker and overall much cheaper method for productions with a low budget.

- Another advantage to using this form of research would be that information/ results which have been gathered previously would not just be saving your time through not having to conduct the research yourself to find out that information but also knowing that it has been used before will help knowing that it is reliable to some certainty as it has been used by others.

Disadvantages:

- One disadvantage to using Secondary Research over other forms of research would generally be the fact that the information may not be tailored towards the short film's actual topic meaning that the research undertaken would be irrelevant and therefore have been a waste of time and resources.

- Another disadvantage to have using this form of research would be that in some case the information which is being gathered depending on the date of it being issued and the date of now trying to use it this can cause complications as the information may no longer be useful as it could be out of date.

In conclusion, Secondary Research would not be my first choice of research even though using other forms would be more expensive, I feel using methods such as Primary Research where conducting questionnaire's, surveys etc. At least with this I would be aware of the information in which I am gathering to know that it is up-to-date and relevant on the topic in which I am researching as I would have been the one to conduct the questions etc.
